The effort has been allocated resources including 11 helicopters, six planes with bird dogs, more than 70 pieces of heavy machinery, 16 Department of Natural Resources personnel, 41 Ontario and 89 local firefighters. Twenty Ontario firefighters are leaving, and 40 from Quebec are arriving today.
Firefighting efforts are currently focused on constructing fire breaks, comprising dozer guards, hose/pumps, and aircraft targeting hot spots, around the entire perimeter. This enables ground crews to work safely. Once fire breaks are established along sections of the perimeter, crews proceed to work from the outside in to extinguish the fire.
